Description
An original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, manufactures product or components that are purchased by another company and retailed under that purchasing company’s brand name. OEM refers to the company that originally manufactured the product.
A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that are mouldable. Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often contain other substances. They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural. SIS selects only A grade recycled plastic for our manufacturing process, and recycling plastic is a complex process when compared to other materials like glass and metal – plastic polymers require greater processing (heat treating, thermal depolymerisation and monomer recycling) to be recycled. Due to the high molecular weight of their large polymer chains, plastics have a low entropy of mixing. A macro molecule interacts with its environment along its entire length, so total energy involved in mixing it is large compared to that of an organic molecule with a similar structure. Heating alone is not enough to dissolve such a large molecule, so plastics must often be of nearly identical composition to mix efficiently. SIS understands this complex process.
SIS understands that there are two distinctly different corporations / individuals that approach us to manufacture products on their behalf. These are firstly where a new product is being developed from its infancy and feasibility studies are being conducted on this material and secondly, where an existing product manufactured from more standard materials such as timber or steel is to be re-birthed due to either performance issues with the existing or to increase a products environmental credentials.
SIS understands that during the development process of any new product there is in most cases a fragile path of which needs to be walked in relation to the intellectual property rights associated with designs, drawings etc. SIS treats intellectual property of all its clients with the upmost sensitivity and can be trusted as a development partner of any OEM component or product.
A cost estimate for injection moulding tooling for recycled plastic components is between $10,000.00 – $25,000.00 USD.
